Stalled Diplomacy: Iran and US Clash Over Geneva Agreement Claims

A potential breakthrough in US-Iran relations has dissolved into a public war of words, as Tehran pushes for a finalized Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding while Washington vehemently disputes the terms. The diplomatic friction centers on a reported deal in Geneva that remains shrouded in conflicting narratives and accusations.

Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi maintains that the agreement is nearing completion, promising full transparency once the final document is signed. Diplomatic sources cited by CNN suggest the pact includes a 60-day ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and significant sanctions relief. However, Iranian spokesperson Esmail Baghaei has publicly rejected these reports, characterizing the negotiations as an ongoing process rather than a settled matter.

The volatility escalated when President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to denounce Iran’s characterization of the talks. Trump accused the Iranian leadership of bad faith and redirected focus toward security incidents near the Strait of Hormuz. These comments further complicate the path to resolution, particularly as the US military has previously acknowledged its own involvement in regional tensions, leaving the future of the proposed Geneva summit increasingly uncertain.
