Dhaka Demands India Clarify Stance on Hasina’s Virtual Political Rally

Bangladesh has officially requested that India clarify its position regarding the planned virtual address of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from New Delhi. Dhaka warns that permitting the fugitive leader to conduct political activities from Indian soil risks undermining the delicate efforts to repair bilateral relations between the two nations.

Dhaka Demands India Clarify Stance on Hasina’s Virtual Political Rally

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam stated on Monday that the government is committed to a forward-looking approach with New Delhi, but cautioned that this progress remains vulnerable to political friction. The controversy centers on an August 5 event hosted by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia, where Hasina is scheduled to speak via video link alongside her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

Dhaka has repeatedly signaled that it considers such public appearances by Hasina—who faces a death sentence for her role in the 2024 crackdown—as detrimental to diplomatic stability. While the event is not state-sponsored, the Bangladeshi government maintains that India should prevent individuals facing criminal charges from utilizing its territory as a platform for political commentary. Despite the ongoing push for her extradition, Hasina has publicly expressed intentions to return to Bangladesh this December, further complicating the diplomatic landscape following her 2024 departure.
