Iranian state media reported on Friday that military forces fired warning missiles at two US destroyers in the Gulf of Oman, allegedly forcing the vessels to withdraw. The Pentagon's Central Command swiftly rejected the account, labeling the claim entirely false and maintaining that its ships continue to operate freely in the region.
The Iranian military justified the reported action as a response to what it termed maritime misconduct, harassment, and the hijacking of commercial oil tankers by US naval forces. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tension surrounding the April 8 ceasefire, which was intended to stabilize the region following the outbreak of hostilities on February 28.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently declared the end of Operation Epic Fury, asserting that Washington had dismantled Iran’s conventional navy and air force. Despite these claims, the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical flashpoint. Iran maintains a naval blockade on the waterway, while the United States enforces a counterblockade on Iranian ports, keeping the strategic transit route for one-fifth of the world’s oil supply effectively paralyzed.
