US Manufacturing Growth Hits Four-Year Peak Amid Supply Hurdles

US manufacturing activity climbed to its highest level in over four years this July, fueled by a surge in new orders and the first employment gains in 33 months. Despite this expansion, heightened geopolitical tensions and persistent supply chain bottlenecks continue to keep input costs at elevated levels for domestic producers.

US Manufacturing Growth Hits Four-Year Peak Amid Supply Hurdles

The Institute for Supply Management reported its manufacturing PMI reached 55.6 in July, surpassing the 54.0 forecast and climbing from 53.3 in June. This growth is bolstered by businesses aggressively front-loading orders to hedge against shortages and the ongoing AI infrastructure buildout, which remains a primary driver for the technology sector. With business inventories at historic lows, analysts see significant potential for further expansion, even as 15 of 18 manufacturing industries report growth.

However, the outlook among purchasing managers remains cautious, with 62% of survey responses citing negative sentiment. Executives point to the conflict in the Middle East and logistical disruptions in the Red Sea and Suez Canal as primary drivers of volatility. Manufacturers of electrical equipment and primary metals described current lead-time extensions as exceeding the chaos of the pandemic era. While the ISM’s gauge of prices paid for inputs dipped slightly to 71.1 from 73.0, the broader inflationary pressure remains, as companies scramble to pass higher freight and material costs to consumers. With the Federal Reserve monitoring these persistent price signals, the tension between robust industrial output and rising input costs defines the current economic landscape.
