A mysterious structure appeared and vanished within days at the contested Scarborough Shoal, prompting a Philippine investigation into potential territorial encroachment. The brief presence of the object, captured by satellite imagery, highlights the volatile nature of the reef, a flashpoint for maritime disputes between Manila and Beijing.
The anomaly, identified in images from May 27 through May 30, appeared as a reflective object or floating barrier at the lagoon’s entrance. Ray Powell of the U.S.-based group SeaLight noted the feature seemed permanent before it disappeared by June 1. Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro confirmed authorities are reviewing the reports, which surfaced during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.Scarborough Shoal remains a critical friction point since China assumed control of the area in 2012. While Beijing asserts sovereignty over the feature—which it calls Huangyan Dao—the Philippines maintains the reef falls within its exclusive economic zone. Tensions have escalated recently, marked by frequent confrontations between Chinese coast guard vessels and local fishermen. Although a 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling invalidated China’s broad claims in the region, it stopped short of defining legal ownership of the shoal. The recent appearance of the structure follows a period of heightened Chinese military patrols, which intensified after joint maritime exercises involving Philippine and U.S. forces.
