Casualties Mount as Cargo Ships Targeted in Azov Sea

Five Azerbaijani nationals are dead and three remain injured after strikes hit two cargo vessels in the Sea of Azov. While the ships lacked Azerbaijani ownership, 25 citizens of the country were among the crew caught in a crossfire between Ukrainian military operations and Russian maritime logistics.

Ukrainian drone units, led by commander Robert Brovdi, recently launched a series of strikes against vessels docked in Mariupol and Berdyansk. The military campaign targets ships accused of transporting stolen Ukrainian grain and military hardware, framing the vessels as legitimate strategic assets in the ongoing conflict.

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin condemned the strikes, placing full responsibility on Kyiv for the loss of life on civilian-registered craft. He extended condolences to the families of the victims while highlighting the deteriorating state of safety for commercial shipping in the contested waters. The incident underscores the spillover of regional hostilities into international maritime transit, leaving neutral crews vulnerable to the escalating tactical maneuvers.
