Vladimir Putin has dismissed Western attempts to leverage India’s foreign policy, asserting that pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi is counterproductive to global stability. Speaking in St. Petersburg, the Russian leader framed India as a reliable partner, brushing off concerns that New Delhi’s ties with Washington could jeopardize Moscow’s strategic interests.

The Kremlin remains optimistic about economic expansion, projecting that bilateral trade between Russia and India will climb to $100 billion in the coming years. This forecast follows a strong 2025 performance, where trade turnover reached $68.7 billion. Putin emphasized that current geopolitical maneuvers, including US tariffs on Indian goods related to Russian oil purchases, have failed to create lasting friction or alter the trajectory of the two nations' economic cooperation.

Addressing the complex regional dynamics in South Asia, Putin maintained a stance of diplomatic neutrality regarding India’s neighbors. He characterized Pakistan as an independent actor, rejecting the notion that Islamabad operates under Beijing’s total control. Similarly, he declined to intervene in the long-standing boundary disputes between New Delhi and Beijing, describing those relations as delicate. According to the Russian president, both Modi and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are capable of resolving their differences through direct dialogue, noting that Russia’s own partnerships with both countries remain balanced and distinct.
