Donald Trump signaled a shift in his administration's Iran policy, stating he would be honored to meet Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei if a formal agreement is reached. The president’s comments arrive as the White House softens its demand for the removal of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, currently held in storage.
The president dismissed the necessity of a peace deal contingent on the extraction of enriched uranium, describing the material as effectively entombed. This marks a departure from his previous insistence that the destruction of Iran’s nuclear stockpile was a mandatory prerequisite for any diplomatic progress. Trump noted that while the United States holds the military capacity to seize the materials, he sees no strategic reason to pursue such an operation.Regarding the potential for high-level diplomacy, Trump acknowledged the personal history between the two nations following the death of former leader Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli strike on February 28. Despite the loss of the current leader’s family members in that campaign, the president expressed an expectation of professional conduct from the 54-year-old cleric. Trump conceded that he is likely not the Supreme Leader’s favorite individual, yet cited reports that Khamenei maintains a favorable reputation in certain diplomatic circles.
