During a targeted sweep in Arizona, federal agents apprehended 30 Indian nationals working as commercial truck drivers despite lacking legal status. The arrests, part of a broader crackdown on unauthorized operators behind the wheel of semi-trucks, mark a significant escalation in enforcement efforts along major US transit corridors.

The arrests occurred between May 11 and May 15 under Operation Checkmate, a federal initiative focused on removing undocumented individuals from the commercial transport sector. Border Patrol agents in the Yuma Sector detained 52 people in total, 36 of whom were operating semi-trucks. Beyond the 30 Indian citizens, the remaining drivers were identified as nationals of Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia.

Many of those detained held commercial driver's licenses from states including California, New York, Washington, and Virginia, though some operated without any valid documentation. Several drivers relied on expired employment authorization documents. Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin Caudle stated the operation is designed to mitigate safety risks on American roads, citing the potential for fatal accidents caused by unqualified operators. The Department of Transportation has previously tightened regulations to prevent foreign nationals without proper status from securing commercial vehicle credentials.
