Twenty-two medical specialists oversaw Donald Trump’s latest annual physical, a figure that dwarfs the physician teams assigned to his predecessors. While the White House characterizes the gathering of experts from institutions like Harvard and Duke as a gold-standard preventive measure, the unprecedented scale of the evaluation has drawn immediate scrutiny.
The president’s physician, Sean Barbabella, maintains that the examination confirms Trump remains in excellent health. White House officials argue that the multidisciplinary approach ensures a comprehensive assessment, catching potential health issues before they escalate. This strategy represents a significant shift in medical oversight: George H.W. Bush was evaluated by five specialists in 1989, while George W. Bush saw 12 during his initial checkup in 2001.Cardiologist Jonathan Reiner has publicly questioned the necessity of such a large panel, noting that 22 specialists for a single visit is exceptionally high. This expansion follows a clear upward trend in the administration's medical reporting. Trump was evaluated by 11 specialists in 2019 and 14 during his physical last year. The administration has frequently faced questions regarding the transparency of these checkups, particularly following an unexplained second visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that deviated from the standard single-exam annual protocol.
