Ten thousand demonstrators converged on the SK Olympic Handball Stadium this Saturday, marking the second consecutive day of unrest following local elections. The crowd, fueled by reports of widespread logistical failures, demanded a complete rerun of the contests for mayoral and local assembly seats held earlier this week.
The controversy centers on a critical shortage of ballots that disrupted voting at 50 of the nation's 14,300 polling stations. These lapses forced temporary suspensions at 22 locations, effectively disenfranchising an unspecified number of citizens and triggering the immediate resignation of the National Election Commission’s leadership.Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon has publicly condemned the failure, labeling the disruption an intolerable violation of democratic rights. He is calling for the formal disbandment of the election commission and the launch of a special investigation into the oversight. Among the protesters—a coalition ranging from concerned citizens to conservative digital activists—pressure is mounting on officials to nullify the results and return to the polls.
