Former Indiana Representative Stephen Buyer, who served 22 months in federal prison for insider trading, received an unconditional pardon from President Donald Trump on Friday. The move effectively clears the former lawmaker of charges stemming from his misuse of confidential corporate data during a high-profile telecommunications merger.
The conviction centered on Buyer’s activities as a consultant for T-Mobile, where he leveraged non-public information regarding the company’s 2018 merger with Sprint to secure more than $300,000 in illicit trading profits. A jury found him guilty in March 2023, rejecting his claims of innocence despite his past role as a prominent House manager during the impeachment proceedings of President Bill Clinton. The White House justified the clemency by highlighting Buyer’s military background and his tenure in Congress. The pardon followed a coordinated push from 52 current and former legislators who advocated on his behalf. This executive action renders the Supreme Court’s recent refusal to hear Buyer’s appeal moot, providing a total legal reprieve for the Indiana Republican.
