Thousands of supporters swarmed the Chennai airport and K Annamalai’s Panaiyur residence on Friday, marking the former Tamil Nadu BJP president’s first public appearance since launching his independent political initiative, 'Idhu Namma Iyakkam'. The transition signals a definitive break from national party structures toward a localized grassroots agenda.
The homecoming event served as an unofficial debut for his new movement, drawing defectors from established political camps. Among those pledging allegiance were OMR Somu, who recently vacated his position within the AIADMK, and Tiruporur North Union Youth Wing official Bhaskara 'Boxer' Sundar. Their presence highlights a shifting loyalty base in the region as Annamalai seeks to consolidate support outside the traditional party apparatus.Nitin Nabin formally accepted the resignation earlier that day, closing a chapter that Annamalai described as a long-gestating departure. In his correspondence to party leadership, Annamalai cited irreconcilable differences regarding the political trajectory of Tamil Nadu. He maintained that the exit was not a reactive decision but the culmination of 18 months of internal deliberation, intended to ensure a seamless handover of his previous responsibilities before pivoting to his own platform.
