The U.S. State Department greenlit a $1.57 billion arms package for New Zealand on Friday, signaling a significant expansion of the country’s maritime and anti-submarine capabilities. The approval covers a pair of high-value procurement contracts aimed at modernizing the nation’s rotary-wing fleet and underwater defense arsenal.

The bulk of the investment, valued at $1.5 billion, centers on the acquisition of five Lockheed Martin MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopters. These aircraft come equipped with advanced mission systems, with Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems serving as the primary contractor for the deal.

Beyond the helicopters, the agreement includes a $69 million purchase of 20 MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes. This hardware upgrade is designed to bolster New Zealand's tactical defensive readiness, providing a substantial boost to its naval strike and reconnaissance potential.
