The U.S. State Department greenlit a $1.57 billion arms package for New Zealand on Friday, signaling a significant expansion of the country’s maritime and anti-submarine capabilities. The approval covers a pair of high-value procurement contracts aimed at modernizing the nation’s rotary-wing fleet and underwater defense arsenal.
The bulk of the investment, valued at $1.5 billion, centers on the acquisition of five Lockheed Martin MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopters. These aircraft come equipped with advanced mission systems, with Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems serving as the primary contractor for the deal.Beyond the helicopters, the agreement includes a $69 million purchase of 20 MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes. This hardware upgrade is designed to bolster New Zealand's tactical defensive readiness, providing a substantial boost to its naval strike and reconnaissance potential.
