The dispute centers on two members of the Iranian delegation whom the US government alleged remained in the country past their authorized window. A US official, speaking to AFP, claimed Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered their removal after they failed to comply with earlier instructions to vacate. Axios reported that the US mission formally notified Iran on Friday that it was aware of the lingering presence of these individuals.
Araghchi responded to the accusations on X, characterizing the US stance as a performance of strength that violates the host nation obligations inherent to UN diplomacy. He noted that taking pride in a fabricated expulsion is unbecoming of a diplomatic corps. This friction follows a broader pattern of stalled communication between Washington and Tehran, highlighted recently by President Donald Trump’s rejection of Iranian conditions regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi reiterated that the ongoing conflict lacks a military solution, warning that further aggression would only invite a more forceful defensive response from Iran.
