Indian political leaders signal support for Nepali Congress convention

As the Nepali Congress gathers 7,700 delegates for its 15th General Convention, leaders from India’s two primary political forces have sent formal messages of support. The event, which officially opened this Sunday following weather-related delays, marks a pivotal moment for the party’s internal democratic processes and leadership elections.

BJP President Nitin Nabin lauded the organizational effort led by Gagan Kumar Thapa, emphasizing the historical party-to-party ties between the BJP and the Nepali Congress. In his correspondence, Nabin underscored India's commitment to supporting Nepal’s ongoing relief efforts following recent natural disasters, framing the convention as a vital step in bolstering Nepal’s democratic trajectory.

Simultaneously, Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted the shared ideological roots between the two organizations, specifically citing the legacy of late founder BP Koirala. Kharge, who dispatched Vivek Tankha to represent him at the Kathmandu gathering, stressed that the convention serves as a platform to deliberate on civil liberties and the fortification of democratic institutions. With the convention now underway, delegates are set to move into closed sessions before the election process commences on October 7 and 8 at City Hall.
