Clayton, a former Wall Street lawyer with no previous background in the tech sector, has been tapped to spearhead the initiative, dubbed the Super Intelligence Force. His mandate includes delivering a comprehensive report on the landscape of AI risks within 120 days. The administration emphasizes that failing to outpace competitors poses the greatest threat to national security, framing technological supremacy as a defensive necessity.
The task force charter explicitly mandates the protection of innovation by avoiding regulatory capture. Beyond research, the group is tasked with refining the government's response capacity using existing legal authorities. Clayton joins a high-level team including Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to oversee these developments. The appointment marks a transition in the administration's informal AI leadership following the departure of venture capitalist David Sacks.
