Kerala Home Minister orders vigilance probe into CEC Gyanesh Kumar

A 2006 suicide note left by Malaysian engineer Lee See Been has prompted Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to order a vigilance inquiry into Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The petition alleges serious irregularities occurred during Kumar's tenure as the state’s Public Works Department secretary nearly two decades ago.

Chennithala confirmed on Sunday that he forwarded a complaint filed by Congress activist Malayinkeezhu Venugopal to the Vigilance Director. The petition links the current election official to alleged malpractices in a state road project involving the late engineer, whose written testimony specifically named the then-PWD secretary. The Home Department has requested access to original files from 2006 to determine if the initial inquiry was compromised by external influence.

While Chennithala maintains that this investigation is a procedural duty rather than a political maneuver, he openly criticized Kumar’s current role as a tool of central government leadership. He argued that his responsibility as a minister mandates a thorough examination of any potential cognizable offense, regardless of the subject's current high-ranking position. The probe aims to establish whether legal action is warranted based on the evidence presented in the activist’s submission.
