Delhi Police Crime Branch to Probe Journalists' Harassment Allegations

Three journalists have filed formal complaints alleging sexual harassment by police personnel during a protest in New Delhi on October 3. The Delhi Police confirmed the transfer of these cases to the Crime Branch at Kamla Market, citing a need for a fair and impartial investigation into the reported misconduct.

The allegations surfaced following a demonstration near Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi publicly addressed the incident, questioning Home Minister Amit Shah regarding police conduct during the event. Gandhi claimed that police officers, tasked with public safety, instead engaged in aggressive behavior toward female journalists and student protesters.

Beyond the harassment claims, the protests led to significant tension in the capital as demonstrators—including AISA members, senior advocates Prashant Bhushan, and Kapil Sibal—attempted to move past barricades. Authorities have since registered three separate FIRs at the Parliament Street and Connaught Place police stations in connection with the broader unrest surrounding the electoral roll revision process. The shift to the Crime Branch marks an escalation in the official response to the claims leveled against the force.
