R Ashoka threatens siege of police stations over voter list dispute

Karnataka Leader of Opposition R Ashoka vowed to launch mass agitations and surround police stations if the state government continues to use law enforcement to target BJP workers. The warning follows a memorandum submitted to the Director General of Police, accusing the ruling Congress party of politicizing the force.

The political friction centers on the routine revision of electoral rolls, a process Ashoka insists has been standard since Independence. He dismissed recent government complaints as hypocritical, noting that the Congress party previously accepted Election Commission procedures when winning their 136 seats but now labels the process illegitimate. Ashoka specifically targeted Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, alleging that police departments are being coerced into acting as extensions of the Congress party.

Beyond the immediate arrests of party activists, Ashoka leveled a broader accusation against the state administration, claiming the government intends to add 25 lakh non-citizens to the voter rolls. He characterized this as a strategic effort to manipulate the electorate, promising a significant protest movement if the administration proceeds. The opposition leader urged the government to govern with dignity for its remaining year in power, rather than resorting to intimidation tactics against political rivals.
