Pawan Khera Declares Aam Aadmi Party on Verge of Extinction in Punjab

A steady exodus of political figures toward the Congress party signals a deepening crisis for the Aam Aadmi Party, according to senior Congress leader Pawan Khera. Following the defection of former AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar, Khera suggested that the regional powerhouse is rapidly losing its relevance and ideological grip in Punjab.

The shift in allegiances gained momentum Saturday as Kakkar, former Uttar Pradesh MLA Shyam Sundar Sharma, and journalist Rajat Rakesh Tandon officially joined the Congress ranks. Khera framed these arrivals as a natural reaction to the current political climate, asserting that those prioritizing the preservation of the Constitution and democratic institutions increasingly view Congress as their only viable vehicle. He pointed to the arrival of leaders like Apni Janta Party president Swami Prasad Maurya as evidence of a broader realignment within the INDIA bloc, predicting that this wave of defections will persist through the upcoming election cycle.

Addressing internal shifts within his own party, Khera defended recent leadership changes in the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, where Aradhana Misra ‘Mona’ was named president and Imran Masood appointed as working president. He dismissed suggestions that these appointments were driven by caste or religious calculations, characterizing them instead as routine strategic rotations. For Khera, the transition of personnel is not a reflection of past failures but a pragmatic recalibration of roles to better suit the party's evolving electoral goals.
