Opposition Leaders Arrested Amid Protests Over Election Integrity

Protests erupted across India on Friday as AAP and Congress leaders demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the commission of overseeing systemic vote theft. Authorities responded by detaining high-profile opposition figures, fueling a deepening confrontation between the government and the INDIA alliance.

Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Anurag Dhanda condemned the detentions, noting that instead of investigating allegations against the Election Commission, the government is targeting those calling for accountability. Dhanda, who reported that leaders including Atishi were taken into custody, argued that the current administration is suppressing dissent to shield the commission from scrutiny. Protests have already mobilized in Mumbai, Delhi, and several other regions, signaling a surge in public frustration.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal framed the situation as a critical struggle for the preservation of democracy, describing the current political climate as a "do-or-die" fight. Alleging that the votes of ordinary citizens are being undermined by the Election Commission under the direction of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah, Venugopal confirmed that the opposition is prepared for further mass arrests. He stated that the alliance remains undeterred by the threat of imprisonment, framing the potential for more jail time as a necessary sacrifice to challenge the integrity of the electoral process.
