Assam BJP Marks Gandhi Jayanti with Statewide Cleanliness Drive

Equipped with brooms and waste collection gear, Bharatiya Janata Party workers fanned out across Assam on Friday to observe Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. The statewide Swachhata Abhiyan saw local cadres target public parks, roads, and monuments, aiming to transform the national sanitation initiative into a consistent grassroots movement.

State BJP President Dilip Saikia led the effort at the Shaheed Bedi near Bharalumukh in Guwahati, where he paid tribute to Gandhi alongside Central Guwahati MLA Vijay Gupta. Party officials described the event as a direct response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to prioritize sanitation as the foundation of a healthy nation.

Beyond the ceremonial cleaning of the Tarun Ram Phookan Park area, party spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Goswami emphasized that the campaign is intended to move past symbolic gestures. According to Goswami, the organization views these drives as an ongoing responsibility, with district and mandal committees tasked with maintaining local awareness programs beyond the holiday.
