Opposition groups protest Election Commission over voter roll revisions

Under the shadow of Section 163 restrictions and a heavy police presence, protesters from the Youth Congress, SFI, and DYFI gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Friday. Their demand remains singular: the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar following alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision exercise.

Former CJP spokesperson Vijeta Dahiya defended the assembly, arguing that citizens possess a fundamental right to challenge electoral processes. The demonstration in the capital mirrored similar actions in Mumbai, where activists converged on Shivaji Park. These nationwide protests stem from persistent grievances held by opposition parties and civil society groups regarding the integrity of current electoral rolls.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed the allegations as a fabricated narrative. He stated that the Election Commission had already addressed these concerns during a recent press conference, rendering the ongoing protests ineffective. Despite this, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das intensified the rhetoric, labeling the Chief Election Commissioner a traitor and calling for a mass mobilization similar to past youth-led movements. As the standoff continues, authorities maintain a heightened security posture in both Delhi and Mumbai to manage the unrest.
