Venugopal’s remarks followed a surge of demonstrations across the country, where activists and opposition figures gathered to challenge the conduct of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In Delhi, police detained AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj near Jantar Mantar as protesters demanded the Commissioner’s immediate removal. Simultaneously, civil society groups, including the Cockroach Janata Party, mobilized at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park to condemn irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision exercise.
The INDIA bloc has positioned these protests as the start of a sustained nationwide campaign, with upcoming rallies scheduled for October 6 and November 1 in the capital. Central to the opposition’s grievances are allegations that electoral rolls have been manipulated to favor the BJP. Beyond the demand for Kumar’s resignation, the alliance is pushing for a return to paper ballots, the rejection of current post-revision rolls, and the establishment of a robust appeals mechanism to address the exclusion of legitimate voters from the electoral process.
