The controversy centered on a newly constructed road connecting Sathankulam and Nazareth. Near the Karumeni River bridge, a directional sign listed destinations including Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur, Alwarthirunagari, and Tirunelveli. Unlike the standard practice of using only Tamil and English, this installation prioritized Hindi directly after Tamil, a deviation that quickly gained traction on social media.
Political leaders, including DMK president MK Stalin and PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss, condemned the inclusion, questioning the state government's role in the matter. Given the historical sensitivity regarding the use of Hindi on signage within Tamil Nadu, the public outcry was swift. Following the intense criticism, the Highways Department removed the controversial lettering and confirmed the temporary suspension of the Assistant Executive Engineer and the Assistant Engineer overseeing the project.
