Elon Musk Tapped to Co-Lead Pentagon’s Project Meridian

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has returned to the federal fold, appointed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to co-lead Project Meridian, a high-stakes Pentagon study focused on the future of warfare. The initiative aims to integrate private-sector innovation directly into the military’s long-term strategic planning over the next 120 days.

Musk joins a select panel alongside 34-year-old Anduril Industries co-founder Palmer Luckey and 83-year-old former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Hegseth introduced the project at Quantico, framing the collaboration as a mechanism to exploit a unique American advantage: the fusion of senior policy leaders with rapid technological innovators. The move signals a formal reconciliation between Musk and President Trump following a public falling-out over federal spending legislation last year.

The billionaire’s involvement arrives as his firms deepen their entanglement with national security infrastructure. SpaceX is currently constructing satellite networks for the administration’s "Golden Dome" missile defense shield, while xAI has secured agreements to integrate its Grok chatbot into classified military systems. Musk’s influence has steadily regained momentum, marked by his presence at high-level AI summits and state dinners, including a recent visit to Beijing alongside the President. According to Federal Election Commission filings, Musk remains a primary financial engine for the Republican party, contributing at least $90 million toward the upcoming midterm elections.
