UN Intervenes in Thailand’s Custody of Chinese Journalist Bai Zhaodong

Bai fled China in 2023 following a history of human rights advocacy and has been formally recognized as an asylum seeker. Despite completing a prison sentence for immigration violations, he has remained in Thai custody since January 2026. UN representatives report that two separate attempts to facilitate his resettlement in a third country have failed, while Beijing has moved forward with a formal extradition request.

The situation has drawn scrutiny toward Thailand’s recently adopted deportation regulations, which critics argue lack essential human rights safeguards. UN experts are now demanding that the Thai government uphold the principle of non-refoulement, which strictly forbids returning individuals to territories where they face systemic danger. They emphasize that any deportation framework must provide refugees with guaranteed access to asylum processes, independent judicial reviews, and rigorous individual risk assessments before any transfer occurs.
