The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs moved quickly to condemn the incident, distancing the state from the inflammatory display. Officials described the act as an outlier that fails to represent the country’s standard diplomatic conduct, even as maritime territorial disputes between the two nations continue to escalate.
Chinese embassy spokesperson Ji Lingpeng characterized the stunt as a deliberate attempt to sow discord between the neighbors. Despite the provocation, Lingpeng signaled that Beijing intends to maintain the integrity of bilateral relations. Investigators in Manila are now scouring the sites where the caskets were left, searching for evidence to link the political provocateurs to the organized demonstration.
