Manickam Tagore demands parliamentary inquiry into Jantar Mantar protest

Congress MP Manickam Tagore moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on Friday, calling for an immediate investigation into the police handling of a July 20, 2026, student protest at Jantar Mantar. The motion demands clarity from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the alleged use of excessive force against demonstrators.

Tagore’s notice highlights reports of lathi charges, tear gas, and water cannons deployed against students, including women. He insists the House must determine who authorized the crackdown and whether the response violated constitutional safeguards for peaceful assembly. Beyond the specific tactics employed, the motion seeks a full count of those injured, detained, or arrested during the event. The Congress leader is pushing for a time-bound, independent judicial inquiry to establish accountability and has requested that the government withdraw all FIRs filed against the participants.

Separately, Congress MP Manish Tewari filed an adjournment motion of his own, seeking to suspend standard legislative business to debate a new Anti-Defection Law. Tewari argues that the current framework fails to address mass political defections driven by opportunism, advocating for a stricter legal standard that protects critical dissent while curbing unprincipled party switching.
