Trump backs calls for Fauci prosecution

Donald Trump signaled support for the criminal prosecution of Dr. Anthony Fauci on Thursday, aligning himself with Senator Rand Paul’s push for a Justice Department investigation. The former president cited the legal treatment of his own aides, Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon, as a justification for targeting the longtime infectious disease expert.

Senator Rand Paul escalated his confrontation with the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases after Fauci declined to answer inquiries regarding the COVID-19 pandemic during a recent hearing. Paul, who intends to petition the Justice Department for action, noted that Fauci invoked his constitutional right against self-incrimination more than 100 times during that testimony.

Trump suggested that the legal scrutiny applied to his former staffers creates a precedent for a similar approach toward Fauci. He described the doctor's actions during the public health crisis as more serious than many established crimes. Fauci, who served as the primary face of the federal response for 38 years, remains a polarizing figure amid the ongoing political fallout from a virus that claimed over 1.1 million American lives.
