Former Guerrero Governor Arrested Over Ayotzinapa Disappearances

Attorney General Ernestina Godoy confirmed the charges of obstruction of justice and forced disappearance, citing new testimony provided this year. A protected witness revealed that Aguirre convened a meeting with senior administration officials to suppress evidence related to the night of the 2014 incident. While the state previously claimed no security footage existed of the students’ bus journey, investigators now believe that evidence was intentionally erased to shield those involved in the abduction.

International investigators have long maintained that the students were killed by organized crime syndicates operating in collusion with local police. Angela Buitrago, a member of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts, noted that her team identified Aguirre as a suspect as early as 2015. She emphasized that the state’s active interference denied families the truth for a decade, labeling the event a definitive state crime. To date, the remains of only three students have been identified, leaving the families of the remaining 40 without closure.
