Government prepares for FCRA Bill debate amid minority protests

A delegation of religious leaders and institutional heads met with Amit Shah this week to present a clause-wise critique of the bill. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who accompanied the group, noted that the Home Minister offered assurances that the proposed amendments would not be applied retroactively. However, the delegation remains concerned that the new provisions for asset vesting could lead to the systematic confiscation of charitable, educational, and medical properties based on minor bureaucratic or technical non-compliance.

Opposition parties, led by the Congress, are currently stalling parliamentary proceedings to demand a statement from the Home Minister regarding police actions at a July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar. While Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan has urged Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to convey these concerns to the government, the legislative agenda continues. On Thursday, Parliament passed the Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2026, to regularize Rs 54,067.46 crore in excess expenditure, alongside the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which was cleared by voice vote despite the ongoing standoff.
