AfDB Grants $1 Million to Address Humanitarian Crisis in Northern Togo

The twelve-month project, managed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in coordination with the Togolese government, targets the immediate needs of 7,000 vulnerable individuals. Support includes the registration of 5,000 new arrivals to ensure access to healthcare and education, alongside the distribution of shelter kits to 1,000 households. By addressing housing and legal protection, the initiative aims to stabilize families who have fled violence in the Central Sahel.

Beyond immediate aid, the program focuses on the specific vulnerabilities of women and girls, funding initiatives to prevent gender-based violence and bolster the financial independence of local cooperatives. Pascal Yembiline, the bank’s country manager for Togo, emphasized that the funding serves to preserve social cohesion in a region where nearly 1.9 million people face the indirect consequences of displacement. Martha Phiri, director of the bank’s human capital department, noted that this intervention is a component of a larger strategy to fortify resilience across the Gulf of Guinea against ongoing regional volatility.
