Astronauts Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Lai Ka-ying concluded the two-month cultivation cycle after transporting the seeds via the Shenzhou-23 mission. The current study utilizes two distinct groups: standard japonica rice seeds and a second generation descended from samples grown in orbit during 2022. By comparing these lineages, researchers aim to determine if plants can adapt to space conditions over successive generations.
The experiment employs two primary techniques to evaluate agricultural efficiency. The first tracks standard seed-to-seed reproduction, while the second utilizes ratooning, a method where new stalks emerge from existing roots following a harvest. Beyond the grain itself, the crew is preserving stems and leaves at low temperatures for laboratory analysis upon their return to Earth. This data is expected to reveal how microgravity alters plant physiology, providing the necessary foundation for future farming on the Moon or Mars.
