Lyamin, a tank school graduate and former chief of staff for the "Centre" group of forces, was personally tasked by the President to expedite the formation of the new military branch. His appointment follows a distinguished tenure directing operations in the Donetsk region, a primary objective for the Russian military. The directive came during a televised meeting with defense chiefs where Putin emphasized the need for a highly qualified specialist to oversee the transition.
The reorganization extends beyond the drone command, affecting the broader military hierarchy. Valery Solodchuk, previously the head of the "Centre" group, will shift to oversee military logistics. His former position will be assumed by Andrei Ivanayev, who transitions from his role leading the Eastern group of forces. This structural refinement follows Ukraine’s recent establishment of a dedicated long-range impact command, highlighting an escalating technological arms race that now spans thousands of kilometers of territory and critical infrastructure.
