Jetstar to Enforce Carry-On Fees for Overhead Locker Access

The carrier is introducing a "Priority Carry-on" option, which grants passengers early boarding access and a larger overhead bag while simultaneously removing the previous 7-kilogram weight restriction. The move aligns Jetstar with global low-cost carriers that decouple baggage costs from base fares. Airline management maintains that the policy aims to reduce gate-side weigh-ins and competition for storage space, factors they identified as primary stressors for both travelers and flight crews.

CEO Stephanie Tully stated that the new model supports the company's low-fares philosophy by allowing passengers to pay only for the services they require. However, the announcement has triggered backlash from consumers and political figures. Opposition Senator Bridget McKenzie labeled the fees a "cash grab," while online users questioned whether such charges would eventually extend to other basic amenities. Federal Transport Minister Catherine King noted that while the airline claims the change will keep base fares affordable, the burden of proof rests on Jetstar to demonstrate that benefit to the public, adding that carriers must ensure all additional costs are transparently disclosed at the time of booking.
