Kansas City Fed President Schmid Presses for Tighter Monetary Policy

Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Jeff Schmid argued Tuesday that current monetary policy lacks the bite necessary to curb persistent inflation. Warning that price pressures remain too high, Schmid signaled that the central bank must tighten its stance to steer the economy back toward the Fed’s 2 percent target.

The economy is performing well, yet inflation remains the primary hurdle, Schmid noted in prepared remarks for a banking event. Despite recent data showing a deceleration in June, the official cautioned against relying on a single month of figures, noting that energy price relief has proven fleeting. Rising oil costs, coupled with the volatility surrounding the conflict in the Middle East, leave the inflation outlook uncertain.

Beyond energy, Schmid pointed to a new inflationary factor: the massive capital influx into artificial intelligence. He suggested that such investment is driving price pressures in ways the central bank can no longer ignore. While the Federal Open Market Committee held interest rates steady at 3.5% to 3.75% during its last session, three officials dissented in favor of a hike. Though Schmid does not currently hold a vote on the committee, his stance aligns with growing internal pressure to address price instability. Market participants remain in a state of uncertainty, however, as new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh has refrained from offering specific guidance on his preferred interest rate trajectory.
