Brasilia has communicated to the Argentine embassy that bilateral ties will now be managed at the level of chargé d'affaires. The shift effectively leaves the Brazilian ambassador to Buenos Aires without a return flight, marking a significant cooling of communication between the two regional powers.
This move comes after months of escalating rhetorical hostility from Milei, whose outspoken brand of libertarian populism has frequently targeted the Brazilian leader. While officials in Buenos Aires have yet to issue a formal response, the reduction in diplomatic rank suggests a deliberate effort by the Brazilian administration to distance itself from the current Argentine leadership’s abrasive approach to regional diplomacy.
