Judge Mehta dismisses Oath Keepers sedition convictions

The court’s decision marks the final legal chapter for the nine defendants who had been convicted of plotting to forcibly obstruct the transfer of presidential power following the 2020 election. While the defendants had already been released from prison, the formal dismissal cleanses their records of the original charges. All subjects involved had previously benefited from the mass executive clemency granted by Trump.

In his written order, Judge Mehta expressed strong disapproval of the outcome. He argued that the dismissal diminishes the severity of the violence witnessed at the Capitol and undermines the efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors who secured the initial convictions. According to Mehta, the court was left with no legal alternative but to accept the government's request to drop the cases, noting that the judiciary could not write a different ending to the proceedings.
