Seventeen migrants feared dead in Mediterranean crossing to Mallorca

Spanish authorities mobilized emergency helicopters and issued maritime alerts following the discovery of the pair roughly 13 nautical miles southwest of Mallorca. In a separate incident on the same day, rescue teams recovered seventeen living migrants and two bodies from a different boat, with search efforts continuing for others believed to have been on board.

This corridor has emerged as the fastest-growing migratory passage into the European Union during the first half of the year. According to data from the EU border agency Frontex, smugglers are increasingly shifting operations from Morocco to Algeria, favoring faster vessels to bypass border controls. While overall migration figures to Spain have declined by approximately 25 percent compared to previous periods, the shift in routes continues to present significant challenges for regional maritime safety and cooperation between the two nations.
