Beijing labels Philippine education concerns a political provocation

The diplomatic friction centers on the Philippine defense department’s recent push for stricter oversight of foreign-backed academic programs. Manila cited concerns that Beijing's national security laws compel participants to cooperate with state intelligence agencies. In response, China’s foreign ministry labeled the accusations as malicious lies, claiming that a small group within the Philippines is hijacking bilateral relations for political gain and media distortion.

This verbal escalation follows a period of mounting hostility. Tensions have simmered over contested maritime territories and intensified after Philippine defense chief Gilberto Teodoro publicly branded China as a wicked actor. Beijing responded by imposing sanctions on Teodoro in June, further straining ties. Beyond geopolitics, local anxiety remains high following the high-profile conviction of a former mayor—a Chinese national linked to criminal syndicates—on human trafficking charges, a development that has fueled broader suspicions regarding foreign influence in the country.
