This fresh injection of funding follows a €350 million loan approved just six months ago, marking the largest corporate financing deal the bank has ever executed in Slovakia. The investment program focuses on a technical overhaul of the country's electricity infrastructure, including the modernization of transformers, substations, and high-to-low voltage power lines. By introducing greater automation and smart meter technology, the project aims to stabilize the grid against the fluctuating influx of solar power and the rising load from electric heating and transportation systems.
EIB Vice-President Marek Mora emphasized that bolstering the grid remains a prerequisite for Slovakia to hit its carbon reduction targets and meet surging domestic demand. Beyond local infrastructure, the loan aligns with the European Green Deal, serving as a pillar for reducing fossil fuel reliance across both western and eastern Slovakia. ZSE Group CEO Markus Kaune noted that the funds are essential for building a resilient, future-ready system capable of evolving alongside the needs of businesses and households. This move mirrors the broader EIB strategy, which saw the bank commit a record €11.6 billion to power grids and energy storage across Europe in 2025.
