Pentagon fast-tracks Patriot and THAAD missile production

The Pentagon’s latest framework contract follows a massive $58.6 billion commitment to Lockheed Martin just last week. This industrial surge arrives as military analysts warn that U.S. inventories for these high-demand interceptors have dipped to fewer than 1,000 Patriot units and 250 THAAD systems. These weapons remain the primary shield against ballistic missile threats, a reality underscored by Ukraine's persistent shortages on the front lines.

Beyond scaling assembly lines, the agreement mandates the establishment of a secondary source for PAC-3 solid rocket motors and accelerates the manufacturing of ignition safety devices. This push for hardware mirrors a separate deal with RTX to ramp up Tomahawk cruise missile production, aiming to eventually raise output from 60 units to 1,000 per year. Negotiators have spent months pressuring defense contractors to move past tentative agreements toward this high-volume capacity.
