Boris Nadezhdin confirms departure from Russia

Standing before the Eiffel Tower in a video posted to his Telegram channel, Russian opposition figure Boris Nadezhdin confirmed he has left his home country. The 63-year-old politician, who recently faced a wave of state-sanctioned pressure, told supporters he is safe and currently assessing his next steps abroad.

Nadezhdin’s exit follows a series of systematic legal hurdles designed to sideline his political activity. On July 10, the Justice Ministry officially designated him a foreign agent, a move that effectively disqualified him from participating in the upcoming September parliamentary elections. Shortly thereafter, authorities detained him for questioning and issued a fine for allegedly displaying extremist symbols on social media, a charge he dismissed as absurd.

His departure highlights the narrowing space for dissent within Russia. As a former lawmaker who attempted to navigate the Kremlin’s rigid political system to voice anti-war views, his absence leaves few prominent critics remaining inside the country. Most of his contemporaries are currently serving prison sentences or living in forced exile. This latest development follows his failed attempt to challenge Vladimir Putin in the 2024 presidential race, during which the Election Commission barred his candidacy on technical grounds.
