Germany's DAX outperformed regional peers with a 1.4% gain, while sectors sensitive to energy costs, including travel, leisure, and automobiles, saw healthy advances of 1.6% and 2.2% respectively. Despite the optimism, market sentiment remains fragile. Daniela Hathorn, senior market analyst at Capital.com, noted that while current developments are a step in the right direction, the long-term sustainability of this diplomatic opening remains in question.
Corporate activity provided a counterpoint to the broader rally. AstraZeneca shares dropped 6% following reports of a potential merger with U.S.-based Bristol Myers Squibb, weighing on the healthcare sector. Meanwhile, cable manufacturer Prysmian retreated 2.3% after announcing a $3.8 billion deal to acquire Atkore. Energy giant TotalEnergies also edged down 0.8% as Shell confirmed plans to offload its onshore European renewables business to the French firm. The broader economic backdrop remains cautious; an ECB bulletin released Monday highlighted a sharp decline in euro zone household consumption during the initial weeks of the conflict, serving as a reminder of the region's vulnerability to energy price volatility.
