Iran Executes Two Citizens Over Alleged Israeli Espionage

Two Iranian nationals, Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat, were executed Monday following accusations of passing sensitive military coordinates and imagery to Israeli intelligence. The judiciary reported the pair provided intelligence throughout last summer’s hostilities and during the most recent military escalation, marking another uptick in capital punishments related to national security.

The executions occur as diplomatic channels remain effectively frozen. While U.S. President Donald Trump suggested potential negotiations were slated for Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei flatly denied any active talks between Tehran and Washington. The climate remains volatile, with both nations locked in a cycle of strikes that followed intense domestic unrest in January.

Hostilities between the regional rivals have intensified since mid-June of last year, when a 12-day air campaign drew in American forces. A subsequent U.S.-brokered ceasefire proved fragile, failing to resolve underlying tensions regarding Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Despite repeated threats from Washington to escalate military pressure, formal diplomatic progress remains stalled.
