Opposition lawmakers decry alleged assault on MP Pappu Yadav

CPI(M) MP John Brittas characterized the incident as a sign of growing intolerance, asserting that the ruling party should address criticisms through debate rather than physical intimidation. The clash occurred Sunday, shortly after Yadav’s performance in Parliament where he portrayed a temple priest. Brittas argued that manhandling an elected official sets a chilling precedent for political discourse.

Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat echoed these concerns, framing the event as a direct attack on the right to express dissenting views. Meanwhile, the political fallout continues to widen. Samajwadi Party MP Afzal Ansari has called for a CBI investigation into the alleged mismanagement of Ram Mandir funds, dismissing recent FIRs against opposition leaders—including Rahul Gandhi and Awadhesh Prasad—as tactical distractions from the core financial allegations.

In his own defense, Yadav claimed the incident was a targeted attempt on his life, alleging that a bounty had been placed on him by hostile actors. While BJP MP K Laxman countered that Yadav’s parliamentary performance constituted an insult to Sanatan Dharma, the broader parliamentary opposition maintains that the physical confrontation at Yadav’s home remains an unacceptable breach of democratic norms.
