India eyes centenary Games after strong Glasgow finish

Satyanarayan Shimoga, an official with the Paralympic Committee of India, attributed the team’s success to high morale across the coaching staff and athletes. Reflecting on India’s historic struggle to secure podium spots, Shimoga noted the shift in the country's sporting trajectory. While the 39-medal haul—comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze—fell short of the 61 medals claimed in Birmingham four years ago, officials emphasize that this performance was achieved with a smaller delegation of 122 athletes. Crucially, 30 medals from the 2022 games were won in events excluded from the Glasgow program, highlighting a stronger conversion rate for the current squad.

During the closing ceremony, the Commonwealth Games flag and baton were officially transferred to Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. Ahmedabad is slated to host the 2030 Games, making India only the second nation after Australia to stage the multi-sport event more than once. Following the successful campaign, where long-distance runner Gulveer Singh emerged as the sole double-medallist for the team, the focus shifts to the infrastructure and organizational demands of the upcoming centenary celebration.
