Delhi police detain suspect following attack on MP Pappu Yadav

Delhi police have detained one suspect, Sumit Sharma, following an alleged knife assault on Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, better known as Pappu Yadav, at his official residence. The incident occurred amid escalating tensions over a controversial skit performed by opposition lawmakers regarding Ram Temple donation funds.

Officers at the Tilak Marg Police Station are currently interrogating Sharma, whose medical examination reportedly confirmed high levels of intoxication during the altercation. A second individual, Happy Sharma, remains under investigation for allegedly throwing a slipper at the legislator during the press conference. Pappu Yadav has characterized the confrontation as a targeted assassination plot, claiming his life was in immediate danger before his supporters intervened to disarm the assailant.

The MP’s legal counsel has publicly accused the Delhi Police of negligence and political collusion, arguing that authorities ignored repeated warnings about threats against the six-time lawmaker, including a widely circulated bounty of Rs 51 lakh for his beheading. While the accused party claims the scuffle stemmed from a verbal dispute and denies the presence of a weapon, the incident highlights the volatility surrounding the July 31 parliamentary skit. That performance, which depicted a priest and a donation box, has already triggered a wave of formal police complaints from BJP leaders who allege the display intentionally insulted religious sentiments.
